Every morning, students are given a daily (sometimes every other day) formative assessment, called a "math quiz." The quiz usually corresponds to what we are learning in our Everyday Math Unit.
To save paper, student quizzes are now given over email or Google Docs.
The assessment is based on one item on the Third Grade Quarterly Summative Assessment.
This is an example of a test item from a quarterly summative test.
Math quizzes usually have four items on them. Below is an example of a "math quiz" developed from this one test item above. Click on individual images and zoom if you'd like to see them better:
Why give math quizzes?
Students learn about the skills necessary for the final quarterly tests; they can study from completed quizzes to know what will be on the final test
Allows students to be grouped according to those needing help and those not needing extra help
Focuses instruction for those needing extra help, smaller groups allow for better instruction
Allows students who do not need extra help to work on extension activities
