I really like this book. IE

We reviewed examples in the text where the author asked readers to make an inference. An inference is where you have to take your prior knowledge and clues from the text to "read in between the lines" and understand the author's deeper meaning. The kids are still constructing their knowledge of what an inference is, but we're getting there. One good example a student came up with was on page 19 "What did they want from him anyway?"

We also read aloud chapter 4: Moose. This gave us the opportunity to practice fluency, or reading aloud like one talks. Good fluency is linked to good comprehension. We also spotted some inferences in this chapter. For example, on page 23 when Cody is trying to memorize the way they were going, the reader must infer that this is because he might try to escape camp and return home. On page 24 when his voice cracked, the reader must infer that Cody isn't as confident as he is saying.

Finally, we talked about having your assignment complete and your chapter read before the next meeting. Students have plenty of time in class to complete their assignments...
