This is a problem-type that third grade students typically have difficulty with. It is usually on the OAA.

This problem was set up by a student. It's a little longer than space would allow, so they wrote on the black area.


  • At the beginning of the year, the teacher sets up the problem and different models ways to solve it, problems are usually simple
  • During the middle of the year, problems become more difficult. Students are invited to demonstrate and discuss the ways they solved the problem.
  • Toward the end of the year, students take turns setting up the problem themselves. They are invited to act as the facilitator in the dicussion on how to solve the problem.
